I'm almost too embarrassed to share this with you, but here it is:
My average screen time is 9 hours and 19 minutes per day. Yes, you read that right, over nine hours glued to my phone daily. But here’s the flip side: In 2024, I walked over 4.4 million steps! It’s a balance I’m proud of, but one I know needs adjusting.
Talk about your wake-up moment!
I’d got into a really bad habit. Doom scrolling at 3 AM became my norm, leaving me drained and frustrated at myself. Scrolling at that time wasn’t doing anything productive for me (you know, like sleeping!).
In 2025, I’m making a commitment to break free from my phone and live more intentionally. Now, I know what you’re thinking: ‘But Lyn, isn’t social media your job?’ And yes, it absolutely is. But let’s be real, if I claimed every moment on my phone was strictly work, even under the guise of ‘research,’ I’d only be fooling myself. Sound familiar?
What's working so far
Sleeping without my phone in the bedroom has been a game changer so far. Even if I do wake up, I will nod back off without impulsively reaching for my phone.
I’ve heard of some people reducing their phone’s colour saturation to make a visual platform like Insta or TikTok less appealing and thus, reduce that dopamine hit. Maybe something to thinking about in the future?
All I know is that I’ve set myself a challenge to have less than 5 hours on average by the time June 2025 happens. Can I do it?
Over to you:
Do you struggle with screen time? I’d love to hear your tips or strategies for a healthier digital relationship. I’m so over lifting my phone up every 5 minutes to check on notifications. It surely can’t be healthy. Let’s do this together.
