Remix Your Reels: Turn Old Content Into Fresh Gold
Instagram often surprises us with new features – have you noticed the “memories” story bubble at the top of your feed? I clicked on mine recently and stumbled upon a Reel I made exactly a year ago. I had almost forgotten about it, but it was one of the most fun pieces of content I’d created (in the category of being a bit odd!). Seeing it again reminded me of a key social media truth: many of your current followers haven’t seen the great stuff you posted months ago. When was the last time you scrolled back further than the last nine posts on someone’s profile? Probably never, right?
That’s where the Remix feature comes in – a tool that makes it super simple to refresh old content and share it with a whole new audience.
What Is Remix, and How Do You Use It?
If you haven’t heard of the Remix feature before, don’t worry – it’s one of Instagram’s best-kept secrets for content creators. Here’s a quick guide:
- Find the Reel you want to remix. Go through your profile and choose a post that performed well or that you’re still proud of. Time-wise, anything over three months old (if you post often) is prime for Remixing/resharing.
- Click on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the Reel when you click in to it.
- Select ‘Remix this Reel’. This will open up your editing options.
- Update something – it can be the audio, the on-screen text, or even add a GIF for a fresh twist. Instagram requires you to make a change before reposting.
- Use trending audio. A fresh soundtrack can breathe new life into your old content. I recently swapped the audio of a one-year old Reel to feature Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It gave me al the nostalgia from my uni days, whilst also being bango on trend right now. Guess what? My audience loved it!
- Keep your caption short and sweet. A simple, engaging line is all you need. Get ‘er posted.
Why Remix Old Reels?
Because you don’t always have to reinvent the wheel! Social media is about sharing your core message in different ways. You’re the one who sees 100% of your content, but your audience? They only catch about 10% if you’re lucky. That’s why remixing isn’t just a time-saver – it’s a way to make sure your best content gets the attention it deserves.
I promise it won’t take long – my recent Remix took me two minutes, and it performed even better than when I first posted it!
Here are some ideas for remixing:
- Change the background music to something trending.
- Add new text to highlight a different angle or update the context.
- Overlay a GIF for extra personality.
- Cover old text with a background for a fresh look.
Give this a go and watch how your audience reacts to a “new” piece of content they might have missed the first time around. You’ve already put the effort in – now, let it pay off again!
