The Social Media Tips I Took for Granted – and Why I’m Sharing Them Now

After years in social media, I realised I’ve been taking the basics for granted. A viral TikTok showed me that simple tips can be game-changers - so I'm here to share what I’ve been overlooking.

I’ve been working in social media professionally since 2015. In that time, certain things have become second nature to me. I love teaching others tips and tricks that can make social media management easier and more efficient, but I have to admit something – I sometimes take this knowledge for granted.

If you’re not glued to your phone all day, immersed in the social media world, how would you know all the little hacks and settings that make a difference? And that’s why I want to apologise – and share those tips with you.

We love a self aware moment

Use those gridlines people!

You might remember a recent blog I wrote about a TikTok video I made that went viral. It was a simple tutorial on how to take a picture of the moon with your phone – 4 million views later, I was feeling pretty good about it. I knew it was a neat tip that not everyone was aware of, but when I dived into the comments, I noticed something interesting (as well as some entertaining things too).

Sure, some people were excited that they could finally capture all the moon’s craters without it turning into a big glowing white blob. But a lot of the feedback wasn’t about the moon tip at all. People were genuinely surprised to learn about other camera features I mentioned offhand, like using grid lines to align a shot or pressing the white button next to the red record button in the iPhone camera app to take photos while recording a video.

That feature can be used for loads of scenarios. One of my favourite moments was using that trick to snap a few photos of my cousin Tori while she was running in the Belfast Half Marathon, all while recording a video. These are things I’ve done for years, but seeing the reaction made me realise: not everyone has the same starting point.

a New Approach

This realisation was a wake-up call. I need to remember that not everyone has been living and breathing social media for as long as I have. So, I’ve decided to make some changes.

Going forward, I’m going to keep a running list of questions I frequently get during my social media sprint calls -those 60-minute sessions where business owners book in and get to pick my brain, create a content strategy, and fill their notepads with fun and practical content ideas.

If something comes up there, it’s a sign that my audience wants to know more about it. That’s a perfect opportunity to create a video or write a blog post that provides a step-by-step guide for the next person who asks. My goal is to build a community where everyone learns, improves, and grows together.

Keep the questions coming

So, here’s my ask: Keep asking those “simple” questions! What might seem like basic knowledge to me could be a game-changer for you. Your curiosity helps me serve you better, and I truly believe that a rising tide lifts all boats. Together, we’ll keep growing and learning, one question at a time.
